36×36″ oil on canvas, 2010
private collection (CA)
Having studied Art History at the University of Kansas, I memorized hundreds of Northern Baroque images of still life paintings, many of which included dead fowl, fish and game. For those of you who know me, you also know my dad is a renowned wildlife artist. This painting is a combination of my interest in these two distinctive genres of art. Dead pheasants displayed on the tailgate of a pickup seems to me a modern image to the dutch paintings I love. This is another one of those paintings that evolved quickly and delightfully, achieving my goal with an economy of strokes.
