The PARROT

The PARROT

42×42″ oil on canvas, 1981
collection of the artist
This is one of our favorite paintings in the family, and I painted it as a sophomore at the University of Kansas. My instructor Jim Denney set up this shallow still lfe which included a wax apple, plastic grapes, India brand chalk and the focal point, a parrot-shaped rum bottle. I remember Jim telling me the most successful part of the painting in his estimation is the treatment of the print on the wall to the left of the parrot’s head.
